1 Dalit Awareness Program
1.1 Dalit Awareness
Although the issue of Dalits have been in existence for centuries and the Aid agencies have been engaged in addressing poverty and human rights issues for several decades, the question of Dalits or the positive correlation between poverty and caste (Dalit poverty) has not been a major concern of any aid agency or any international concern. To a great extent there is a big vacuum in the development/ relief/ aid field about the poverty or cause of poverty of over 1/3 of the global poor – Dalits, who are the “historically broken people”. One of the major involvements of VODI after its inception was to penetrate this hard rock of western ignorance on Dalit and their human rights and poverty.
VODI resorted different strategies to create awareness around its membership, friendship, benefactors, church groups community group, academic, development, human right, aid circles etc. The strategies varies from person to person contact –discussion, addressing meeting, taking classes, organising seminars, conferences, international Conferences, visiting agencies, organisations, participating in programmes organised by other agencies and raising the issues, networking with like minded organisations and networking with Dalit Solidarity groups etc.
Information on different Dalit awareness programmes especially takenup with DFID can be found in the following Links.
