ireneIrene Culas:Irene Culas: The Founder Chairperson. Her visits to Indian poor Dalit villages and her association with social activists, inspired her to found Voice of Dalit International Founding Chair of VODI in 1999 in UK. A simple person from Grimsby, UK and trained as Civic Champion under Millennium Commission and working in London Underground as SAMF continues to be the moving spirit of VODI. She volunteers in all the day to day activities of VODI especially in fundraising and networking.

 

Kathleen Barnard:

A friend of Irene from Grimsby. During the difficult days of Irene, Kathleen had been a good friend and so also when she wanted to establish VODI. Since the formation of VODI, Kathleen had been a good supporter of all activities undertaken.

George V.J:Having experienced personally difficulties in daily life of a Dalit, as a student in the University, Mr. George spent time in organising the student body and was the Chair of Student Union in the University. While being the Research Associate in the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum, he decided to commit his life for the development of the marginalized people and started working in Trivandrum District Fishermen Federation. In 1997 he became the Executive Director of Coastal Education and Cultural Trust (CECT), in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. In 1999 he came to UK both as a Trustee of VODI and for the Exposure Training Programme for Dalit leaders organised by VODI. In 2002 he was invited by the Government of Kerala to be the Additional Private Secretary of the Minister of Welfare, Kerala State. During this period he travelled around the State organising Dalits and other marginalized communities. In 2004, he resumed his position in CECT and fully got involved in the organisational work and became one of the National Co-ordinators of Movement for Dalit Christian Rights. He is also the Chair of VODI- India Chapter.

Virender Samra:Personally witnessing and experiencing, the atrocities against Dalits, Mr. Samra has been involved with the Communist movement in his State, Punjab, India. 15 years back he came to UK. Since then he has been contemplating on different ways of helping his people. Mr. Samra responded to VODI's Gujarat Earthquake Appeal and communicated his life long desire and thus slowly became the Trustee of VODI. He is also the Treasurer of VODI.

D. B. Sagar Bishwakarma:

Mr. Bishwakarma is the Chair of National Dalit Federation of Nepal. He is also the Chief Executive of Jana Utthan Pratishthan (JUP), an NGO, working for the Dalit Human Rights. He is also the founder convenor of International Commission for Dalit Rights-ICDR. Currently he is doing his higher studies in Washington, USA.

Fr. Thomas Gulfam:

s a Catholic Priest in the Arch Diocese of Karachi, Pakistan. He is also the Chaplain of Prisons, in the Port of Karachi. On VODI’s request, he was appointed by the Arch Bishop of Karachi Dr. Evarist Pinto to attend to the needs and release of fishermen from India caught in Pakistan jails. In January 2005 he was instrumental in releasing 377 fishermen from Pakistan Jails. In the same month another group of six fishermen were released by his effort. Since 1973 he is attached to education. He has been Principle of different schools. At present he is a Parish Priest and Principle of Sacred Heart Church and School. He was instrumental in supporting the education of so many students of poor families with school fees, books, uniforms etc. He has a very kind heart for poor people. Many times he had distributed among the widows of fishermen provisions, clothes, fishing nets and four-wheel carts for their business. He is qualified teacher, MA; Bed and also done civil Law. He has completed his L.L.B. In Arch Diocese of Karachi, he is in charge of the office bearers of different organizations and commissions. He has attended several Conferences, Seminars, meetings etc. in and out side of Pakistan. He is great preacher and writer. He loves to read books.

R. Eugene Culas:

Straight after University studies, he started working in the Marianad Community Development Project, for fishing community under Trivandrum Social Service Society, the first Diocesan Social Service Society in India by Bishop Peter Bernard Pereira. Initiated the first Fishermen Co-operative Society in south Asia with fish marketing as its cardinal activity surrounded by saving, credit, repayment, intermediate technology, land acquisition, housing, education, health etc. which brought a traditional fishing economy upside down and which became the model for the State Government to enact a law in fisheries. He is the founding Coordinator of Programme for Community Organisation (PCO), Trivandrum, Founder of South Indian Fishermen Federation (SIFFS), Founder of Coastal Education and Cultural Trust (CECT), Trivandrum, Founder of Fathimapuram Housing Project, Executive Director of Trivandrum District Fishermen Federation (TDFF), Initiated Sea Street- Kudappaduva Fishermen Federation, Nigambo, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Founding Member of Voluntary Action Network (VANI), New Delhi, Life Member of National Centre for Advocacy Studies (NCAS), Pune, India and founder and associate of number of local people's Organisations and NGOs in India. In 1998-99 studied Dr. Ambedkar and his thoughts while staying with a Dalit family. In July 99 left for UK for founding VODI. He is the Director of VODI.
